Day 2 Sunday 3rd July: Rooiputs Camp Kgalagadi

We woke to a freezing morning. Locals said they were expecting -11; we checked the car gauge and at 7 am it was -6. We looked like a rugby team in a pre-match huddle, all trying to maximise the warmth from the fire, while sipping early morning coffee and rusks.

We broke down camp and set off for Rooiputs, not far up the Nossib River. Quite a basic camp; few trees, a communal A-frame wooden shelter around which to set up camp. The ablutions consist of one cold shower and a relatively clean long-drop. We luckily have two gas operated showers...one of the highlights so far; so warm showers, our own campsite, and three nights ahead.

We had a wonderful sighting of a huge male lion on the dunes. He stood up and walked off down the river bed, all scheduled perfectly and a lovely way to start our viewing. The day brought classic sights of Gemsbok on top of dunes, sillouted against the sky line; huge herds of Sprinbok, and a variety of 'different' bird sightings.

Once again as the day ended, it meant wrapping up under jackets; scarves and beanies.....then the same faire....delicious webber chickens; vino; kahlua coffees and to bed.
